Waikiki Beach in Honolulu is considered the birthplace of beach volleyball, where, at the Outrigger Canoe Club in 1915, the sport was devised as a way for surfers to pass the time when the waves weren't high enough to surf.
Before long, it would be played all along the Californian coast, then eventually spread to Europe as the game's global appeal proved infectious. Over 80 years after its birth, at the 1996 Atlanta Games, beach volleyball made its Olympic debut. It has featured at every Olympic Games since.
Since then, the sport has continued to grow in popularity, with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) revealing that over 5,500 players from 96 countries have taken part in their Beach Volleyball World Tour events.
As well as the quadrennial global spectacle that is the Olympic Games, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour involves regular tournaments held all over the world for the sport's best players.
Usually beginning in September, the Tour takes in over 50 host cities across Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Australasia during a non-stop 11-month journey. This includes everything from 1-star events with smaller prize money, all the way to top-level 5-star events like the World Tour Finals.
Finishing top of the World Tour points list – calculated by adding each team's eight best results in a season – is considered one of the three highest honours in international beach volleyball. Coming out on top in the 48-team biennial World Championships surpasses it, while the pinnacle for most international beach volleyballers will always be an Olympic gold medal.
Of course, for every forthcoming beach volleyball head-to-head, you'll get the chance to peruse our beach volleyball betting odds. You can bet on outrights, which includes match winner, set winner, total points, over/under and correct score.
We'll also offer handicap markets, while our range of in-play options will allow you to get right in on the action as it happens with beach volleyball live betting.
Our in-play options ensure you get more control on your beach volleyball betting, especially as our Cash in My Bet button allows you to take advantage when your bet is going well, to settle up before the game is over.
When betting on beach volleyball, it's key to know the basics of the game and format. Unlike indoor volleyball, there are only two players on each team, with each team permitted to touch the ball three times before it must be returned over the net.
The first team to two sets is declared the winner, with a set victory recorded by getting to 21 points – or 15 points in the deciding set – by two clear points. This makes total points betting a potentially fruitful and exciting avenue to follow for bettors.
Given where the game was devised, it's no surprise that the USA has a long and successful pedigree in the sport, both at Olympic and FIVB World Tour level.
But, in a manner that brings to mind a similar situation with soccer, the nation who have adopted the game most successfully and almost remoulded it in their own image, is Brazil.
For a country with nearly 7,500 kilometres of coastline and a climate that rewards staying outdoors, the Brazilians have had plenty of opportunities to hone their beach volleyball skills, and it shows.
For while it is the USA that have proven most successful in beach volleyball at the summer Olympics since 1996, it's the Brazilians that have consistently dominated on the FIVB World Tour level, in both the men's and women's games.
Those coming up some way behind the ‘big two' in the overall rankings, but still worth considering in any beach volleyball betting, are the likes of Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and, in the women's game especially, China - nations who have all been capable of upsetting the odds on occasion and taking the limelight away from the traditional heavyweights.
The informed bettor will do well to check the FIVB World Rankings leading into the Olympics, which will give a great indication as to which international pairing are in the best form, along with the results of previous World Championships.
Other things to take note before betting on beach volleyball is the venue and location, as the climate can play a big part in the success or struggle of certain teams should they be from climactically-different parts of the world. With the next Olympics in Tokyo, this is a factor that certainly bears consideration.
